My husband was a first year sparky in 1985. Unfortunately I didn't start Awana until 1992 as a clubber and I've been involved ever since.

Did they have sparkies back then?  I know I was doing the Gaurd book and i remember seeing some kids who were doing Chums  but I have no idea what everyone else did.

They certainly did have sparks back then!

ok sorry.  i understand(something i've gleend from the forums) that the T&T stuff is relatively new and use to be called gaurds and chums, so I wondered if Sparks used to have a different name.

Nope, Sparks has always been Sparks!  And it's been around a long, long, long time!

Re: Class of 1985 or Thereabouts.

Well, Josie, you found one! I graduated in 1985 and started Awana when I was in 5th grade in Guards. I went on to finish all the books to get my Citation award and was a L.I.T. too. This will be my 20th year starting as a leader. (I missed most of last year due to surgery and illness.) I am working with T & T this year. I have been involved in 9 different church clubs and have been in Awana in some way for over 30 years. I have spoken at Awana conferences in Indiana and have worked in every club except Cubbies. In fact my parents had a big hand in the start of Cubbies!

I love Awana! And I'm an alumni! I'm looking forward to this club year! Big Smile

Re: Class of 1985 or Thereabouts.

    in 1985, I was a four-year-old Cubbie!!

so now you can figure out how old I am.  I was a clubber from 1984-1994, Cubbies through 7th grade JV.  I loved Sparks, Chums and Guards.  even miss the old grey uniforms (remember the really dark ones?)  I also remember being ecstatic when the "new" grey uniforms came out, and a little upset my parents couldn't afford one.  but it all worked out!

now I'm a Commander (along with my husband) and my kids are in Sparks and Cubbies!  they are the third generation in my family to be involved in Awana.  my mom and dad worked in Awana for loooooooong time, he was Commander for a while too.

Re: Class of 1985 or Thereabouts.

    ladybug,

You sound just like me!  I graduated in 1985 too!  I started in Awana in 9th grade and as an L.I.T.  At the church I was in, Awana stopped at 6th grade and then in 7th grade, you went to youth group.  They did not have the rest of guards (when it was 6th, 7th, & 8th grades) nor JV and not high school either.  So, I missed out on the early years.  They made me wait until I was in 9th grade to work in Awana.  I wanted to start at 7th grade but they said no.  This will be my 21st year in Awana- cool, huh?  It would be your 21st year too if you didn't have to take last year off.  I too finished all my books and got my Citation!  I am working on my 2nd Citation now and will finish this coming club year.  I too have been involved in many different churches because my young adult life took me to different places and states due to college and work.  I too have spoken at Awana Conferences and have worked in every club but Puggles!  Yes, I have done Cubbies.  That was a funny adventure.  You should read my bio.  I think you would like it.  Just click on my name and it will take you there.  Well, my parents weren't involved in Awana at all.  I guess that is where we differ.  Yes!  I love Awana!  I too am an alumni!  And I too am looking forward to this coming club year!  Sorry it has taken so long for me to respond.  I was on vacation and then our church had VBS and I was the teacher for the 4th-6th grade class.  I was busy for about 3 weeks straight!  I hope you get this post now.  I haven't notice you posting before.  Have you been around the forums much?  Thanks for posting! -Josie Smile

Re: Class of 1985 or Thereabouts.

    mayberrymomx3,

That is soooooo cool you got to do pretty much the whole Awana program!  Yes, I loved the gray shirts and I still love them to this day!  And yes, I remember the really dark gray ones, too!  I liked the new gray ones because they seemed brighter and crisp.  I eventually got one of those also.  I still have it.

Awana means so much to me.  I wish I could be a commander too.  Maybe some day I will get a chance.  I am just a 1st generation Awana alumni.  My dad was in the Boys Brigade- how ever you spell that.  My daughter is 22 months old right now, but I hope she will be a 2nd generation Awana alumni, if the Lord should tarry.

By the way, did you ever go ahead and do the high school Awana books and get your Citation?  I hope so!

So, that would make you..... 27?  Hey, that's my favorite number! Big Smile
